World's first artificial cow's milk to hit the market next year

Earlier this year, a synthetic dairy start-up called Muufri (pronounced “Moo-free") was founded by two bio-engineers in California - Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya. They’re working on perfecting an artificial cow's milk made from a special variety of yeast that has been genetically engineered to produce milk proteins.

Nicknamed an ‘out-of-body udder’, this system is designed to produce milk that retains the taste and health benefits of real milk. The milk is made using the same process that pharmaceutical companies use to produce insulin. DNA is extracted from dairy cows and certain sequences are inserted into yeast cells. The yeast culture is then grown in industrial-sized petri dishes at just the right temperature and concentrations, and within a few days, the yeast will have produced enough milk for harvesting.

"Although the proteins in Muufri milk come from yeast, the fats come from vegetables and are tweaked at the molecular level to mirror the structure and flavour of milk fats,” says Qui at National Geographic. "Minerals, like calcium and potassium, and sugars are purchased separately and added to the mix. Once the composition is fine-tuned, the ingredients emulse naturally into milk.” This of course means that all of the nutritional values can be tweaked by Gandhi and Pandya, so their artificial milk could potentially be even better for you than regular milk.

While initially Muufri milk will be more expensive to buy than regular milk, Gandhi and Pandya hope to eventually make it cheaper as their production is scaled up. But because it won’t contain bacteria like regular milk does, the shelf-life will be much longer. The pair hopes to have their milk on the market by mid-next year.

Marketing Co-op for George Brown College Post-Grad

Being a Strategic Marketing Student at George Brown College, I had to undergo a co-op work placement as a part of my summer semester. Being a lucky, guy I got a co-op placement in my Home Country- India. It was a pump company called 'Jee Pumps' located in Ahmedabad, India. They are leading manufacturer of different industrial use pumps in India.

The company was planning an expansion for their business and the construction of the bigger manufacture infrastructure was underway. It was the Best time for me to join the company as intern as they were in the process of increasing their market as well. Another amazing scenario for me was that the company was in my hometown, so I had a lot of experience about the niche market. This experience made it easy for me to adapt the work environment and I started learning everything quickly.

The Owner of company was too humble and co-operative, as well as the colleagues. Co-operation from everyone made it easy to work for me. Everyone was keen to teach me something when I didn't know something. They had a great marketing strategy for the niche market, but they were lacking the social media marketing element. That is where I was able to help them increase their reach.

It was a great experience working for such organization, where I was able to apply the aspects I learned in college. I was able to generate company's reach to social media marketing. It added an experience of individual work along with the team-work in general marketing.

To sum up my co-op experience, it would not be wrong to tell that I could not ask for a better co-op than this...!!!
